Rachel MaccArthur

MFL Subject Specialist

When will you see Rachel?

You will see Rachel for every specialist MFL training day as a Modern Foreign Languages trainee teacher, as well as on her visits to your schools in order to observe and support you. Rachel works across the Harris Federation as the Spanish Consultant in order to develop departments, share good practice, raise attainment and provide CPD for the Harris MFL Network.

Rachel has taught languages in Zambia, Kenya, Spain, Peru and England ranging from pre-primary through to university level. She has worked extensively in inner-city secondary schools in London, where she headed Spanish for many years, and Bristol, where her role was Raising Standards Leader for MFL in a challenging academy. Her Masters degree, from London Southbank University, led her to delve deeper into the theory and research behind her years of practical experience in the classroom. She conducted studies into narrowing the achievement gap and equality and diversity however her main field of research culminated in a dissertation documenting a tri-cyclical action-research project assessing how best to harness the benefits of native speakers of Spanish within the Spanish MFL classroom. Over the years, Rachel has worked with many trainee teachers on both the Schools Direct and the PGCE programme, been an NQT mentor, and uses her skills on a daily basis as a Specialist Leader in Education to support MFL departments across the Harris Network. As well as coaching and mentoring teachers new to the profession, she has led CPD for NQT mentors at Goldsmiths University disseminating her findings of her Masters research.
