The right course for you
Our one-year School Direct courses are ideal for primary and secondary trainee teachers across a wide range of subject areas.
You’ll learn on-the-job at a placement in one of our 48 academies, with all courses leading to qualified teacher status (QTS), a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and 60 Masters Level Credits.
Whether you are a successful graduate or a career-changer looking to bring your invaluable industry and subject expertise into the classroom in the following subject/phase:
- Primary with Mathematics
- Business Studies
- Design & Technology
- Modern Languages (French, Spanish and Mandarin)
- Physical Education
- Religious Education with Citizenship
Our Primary courses cover the age range 3-11 and our Secondary courses cover 11-16. This means you will have experience across these age ranges. There are also opportunities for trainees to teach at Key Stage 5, if appropriate to their subject.

How long is the course?
Our courses last for one academic year, from September to July. You will attend our Summer School prior to the course to help you prepare for the course, practise teaching skills and develop your subject knowledge. This is also a great opportunity to meet your fellow trainee teachers and tutors.
You will complete the course fully prepared for your Early Career Teacher induction programme.
There are two funding routes available to trainee teachers at Harris Initial Teacher Education: salaried and tuition-fee. Find out more about funding options.
