Dzinja Kabambe: Maths and Computer Science Teacher - Harris Academy Chafford Hundred

Cohort 2019-20

DzinjaIt took a while but in March I finally managed to get myself some work in a school as a Maths Tutor. From then until July I specialised in providing intervention and revision sessions for students leading up to their GCSEs and A-Levels. I was lucky to find a great school to do this in, (Harris Academy Chafford Hundred), and equally lucky to even spend some time in another school and get a variety of experiences.

I'd like to say there were lots of ups and downs, but in reality even the hard times in this role were pretty great. It's been a while since I mentally pushed myself outside my comfort zone, so being able to do this whilst working in a field I love (mathematics) was a really nice introduction.

I decided to apply to Harris Federation for their Initial Teacher Education programme to become a qualified teacher, and was very happy to be accepted on to this programme. The programme looks very comprehensive, and we even had a week long sumer school in June to help us prepare - this was delivered by some extremely talented people and I already know I made the right choice. It was also very good to get to know others on the programme so I already have a large network of friends and colleagues to share experiences with.

In addition, I was successful in securing a Mathematics Teacher Training Scholarship and I am looking forward to my first CPD event with them in September.

My first real lesson is tomorrow (though I did cover a few classes last year). I don't feel too bad about that but next week comes the more challenging/different lessons. I've been so eager to get to this point but now it's here I'm nervous and excited in equal measure at this point, but know I have great support in the academy and through the ITE setup that I can call upon if needed.
