Harris NQT Conference 2016

On Saturday 24th September, the Harris Initial Teacher Education team hosted our annual NQT conference, ‘Excellence, Enrichment, Ethics: Professionalism and the Wider Role of the Teacher’ at the Guoman Tower Hotel. The fantastic views over the river and Tower Bridge made for a great start to the busy day for our NQTs at Harris.

We were honoured to welcome Sir Dan Moynihan, CEO of Harris Federation, for a welcome talk, as well as key note speeches from special guests Tim Oates, Group Director of Assessment Research at Cambridge Assessment, and Sue Cowley, writer, presenter and teacher trainer, and the author of over 25 books on education.

The day progressed with workshops and lectures from Harris Federation consultants and leading practitioners, as well as some brilliant and engaging workshops from external speakers such as ‘Be Well, Teach Well, Live Well – a guide to mindful teaching, avoiding burnout and managing stress using mindfulness’ with the author of Every Teacher Matters, Kathryn Lovewell, ‘Teaching Controversial Issues – an exploration of debate, challenging issues and the role of the teacher’ with author and Institute of Education lecturer, Jeremy Hayward, and ‘Meeting the Needs of Students with English as an Additional Language’ with independent EAL consultant Elaine Noden. Workshops from the Federation staff included ‘Extreme Dialogue’, ‘The Power of Routine in the Primary Classroom’, ‘Creating and Maintaining a Professional Profile’ and ‘Education and Britishness in an Age of Uncertainty’.

We had many positive comments from attendees and we would very much like to thank everyone who was involved in making the 2016 NQT conference such a success.
