Meet the Principal: Terrie Askew, Harris Academy Falconwood
Harris Academy Falconwood has a can-do enterprising culture in which everyone is stretched, nurtured and encouraged.
“When I was at school, I was disappointed by the lack of inspirational teaching. That led to a real desire to make a difference to children’s lives, and I wanted to share my love for my own teaching subject with the young people I worked with.
“I have worked at the Harris Federation since Lord Harris opened Harris CTC in Crystal Palace – which has since gone on to become Harris City Academy Crystal Palace – in 1990. I was Head of Academy there before becoming Principal of Harris Academy Falconwood in September 2008.
“Working for an Academy has the great advantage of increased freedom to guide students’ education compared to Local Authority schools. Harris in particular has a real commitment to increasing aspirations for students, the quality of CPD for staff is very high, and the business-like environment has a strong effect in inspiring professional behaviour among staff and students. Harris truly celebrates student success and invests heavily in their education to ensure the best possible outcomes for them.
“Harris Academy Falconwood is a very popular and oversubscribed school, thanks to the hard work of our staff and students to achieve excellent exam results compared to other local schools. We’ve got a can-do ethos that drives everything we do.
“I’m looking for people who show how passionate they are about making a difference to the life-chances of local students and demonstrate to them how much they care about their progress and achievement. I also look for teachers who want to make the most of the quality CPD, and particularly those who want to stay at the Academy and seek promotion like many of our home-grown middle and senior leaders.”
My top three qualities when looking for a teacher:
“Passion, enthusiasm and subject knowledge are the three key qualities I look for in a teacher.”
